On Crazy Sock Day, also known as Odd Sock Day or Silly Sock Day, many people worldwide don a pair of mismatched, brightly-colored socks to promote Down Syndrome awareness. The occasion falls on March 21, which happens to be World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD).
As well as showing off their colorful, crazy socks at work, school and as they go about their daily chores, people love to post pictures of their chosen silly socks on social media. Not only does this educate others about Down Syndrome, but it can also encourage them to donate to related organizations, such as the National Down Syndrome Society.

how did crazy sock day begin?
In 2012, the United Nations began observing WDSD to increase awareness and understanding of the disorder, though other organizations have celebrated it since 2006. All kinds of activities take place on WDSD, all of which aim to highlight people with Down Syndrome’s abilities and accomplishments.
Down Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by all or part of an extra copy of chromosome 21. Approximately 6,000 babies are born with Down Syndrome every year in the U.S.
Funny Socks Are Perfect for Crazy Sock Day, too!So, what has all this got to do with crazy socks? Well, there are several reasons mismatched socks were chosen to represent WDSD. To begin with, this bold statement is a great way to start conversations and celebrate uniqueness and diversity. On top of that, chromosomes look a little like a pair of socks: Trust us, it’s true!
when is crazy sock day?
World Down Syndrome Day and Crazy Sock Day is celebrated on the 21st day of the third month: March 21. This date was selected to represent the 21st chromosome’s triplication (trisomy), which causes Down Syndrome.
how can you participate in crazy sock day?
As lovers of fun socks, we hope you will join our sock fairies in celebrating Crazy Sock Day and helping to raise global awareness of Down Syndrome. Get yourself a couple of pairs of crazy socks; the wilder the print and the bolder the color, the better! Mix and match them to complete the look. You could even share with a friend!
Whether you’re at work, school or home with the family, there are lots of great ways to embrace Crazy Sock Day. Here are a few ideas to try:
- crazy sock race: Why not gather your neighbors, friends or colleagues and organize a race wearing silly socks instead of shoes? Make sure you pick a safe place to run and wear comfortable socks. There is a strong relationship of fiber content and fabric properties to comfort of socks, so choose a pair that features a blend of cotton and stretch materials for long-lasting comfort.
- funny sock fashion show: Set up a catwalk and show off those socks! And if you’re really ambitious, they don’t necessarily have to be worn on your feet; get your friends and family to make outfits from socks and hold a best-dressed contest.
- get crafty with socks: Soft toys, mug cozies and pincushions are just three of the hundreds of crafts you can make with odd socks. You could even spruce up the socks you plan to wear on WDSD, adding decorative items, such as pom-poms and googly eyes.
- play sock games: From sock tag to sock bowling, there are tons of games that can be given a whole new spin by adding a couple of old socks — preferably clean ones, of course!
- donate socks to those in need: Crazy Sock Day is all about embracing diversity and supporting those in need, so why not extend the spirit to the most vulnerable in our society? Socks are one of the items most requested by homeless people, as charities cannot give secondhand socks for hygiene reasons, so how about encouraging your colleagues, friends and family to donate some new socks to a local homeless shelter?
- organize your sock drawer: OK, so this might not be the most exciting activity on our list, but having a freshly organized sock drawer is a pretty satisfying feeling. Pair up all those socks that have been hanging out in the laundry basket, sort your drawer into different types of socks and fix or throw away the old holey socks you’ve had for years. You can get all the family involved and even turn it into a competition.
Remember: However you choose to mark Crazy Sock Day, take lots of photos and post them on social media to share WDSD with your friends and family.
