our eco-efforts in the spotlight
You guys! We were on the news. Like the local news in our hometown. We’re practically celebrities now!
OK, maybe not, but we are pretty pumped to share this story, because it’s about something we’re really proud of! Our local NBC affiliate, KSBY, stopped by our warehouse last week to talk to us about our environmentally friendly shipping options.
A little over a year ago, we decided to ditch our old single-use plastic mailer bags for a greener option. We now proudly use bags that are made completely from recycled materials and that are reusable. They have two adhesive strips inside. We use the first one to ship your order out, then you could use the bag again with the second adhesive! We shipped out around 40,000 packages last year, so we’re really happy with this change.
We’re also currently looking into some new mailing label options that have recyclable backing paper, we’ve added extra recycling bins around our warehouse, and we laid artificial turf in our outdoor area for water conservation. Down at our brick-and-mortar shop, we always ask customers if they want a bag, and if so, they get a cute, recyclable paper one.
These are little details, we know, but we believe that in the age of online shopping and so many Amazon packages piling up, every little change matters. We’ve actually decided as a business that we will no longer order supplies from Amazon, one of the world’s worst contributors to the excessive-packaging problem. The fashion industry also has a bad reputation when it comes to environmental damage, and while there’s lots more work to be done, we are trying to do our small part. That’s just one component of our overall mission and values here at The Sock Drawer.
Check out the news story below to hear our general manager, Cindy Johnson, talk more about our efforts.
