More Than Socks: Chasity’s Story
Sock fairy note: This blog post is another in our ongoing More Than Socks series, where some of our most beloved customers share stories of connection and joy around our products. Read our past stories from Sister Zina and Carol.
As we’ve mentioned before, our mission here at The Sock Drawer is to weave us a little closer together through the unique, colorful socks we all love. We sock fairies are thrilled and proud to be part of a company that embraces silliness and joy. We sell novelty socks and funny home goods, after all!
But sometimes, a pair of socks is more than just socks. Many of our customers have shared their authentic, personal stories of how our products have meant so much to them on a deeper level. In fact, our gift items often strike a chord with folks as “more than socks,” touching them through a meaningful pattern, or helping them to inspire others.
We’d like to introduce you to another one of our favorite customers: Chasity! (And her dad, Steven.) In fact, this awesome pair is really where our entire series began.
Some time ago, Steven reached out to us with an amazing message, explaining how much Chasity loved our knee high socks. She is a young woman with some physical and mental challenges and wears ankle foot orthotics that help her walk. As Steven explained, "These braces attach to her foot and lower leg, inside of her shoe, and provide stability for the foot and ankle. They are also not very pretty and somewhat bulky."
He added that Chasity prefers to wear knee high socks to cushion her legs from the braces, and then fold the socks down over the top of the braces to hide the straps. Like this:
Of course, all the sock fairies fell in love with this father-daughter pair and were thrilled to learn about Chasity’s ingenuity. Steven sent us several updates, too, including one about chores.
See, one of Chasity’s chores at home is sorting socks when the family does laundry. She usually sits on the sofa with a basket of socks and matches them up while watching TV, often for several hours, her dad told us, because socks tend to look alike.
The sock fairies are super proud of you too, Chasity! This weekend she pulled all of her socks out and matched them up within 20 minutes. She then brought me the remaining basket of socks and told me I could do my own; she had all of hers. That isn't exactly how the chore assignment works, and we will practice that a bit more, but the fact that her socks all suddenly look unique has given her the independence to be able to sort her own clothing without additional help. She was super proud of herself for matching all of her socks.
It gets even better! Check out this message that Steven recently sent us:
A couple of weeks ago my daughter wore her new shark socks to her doctors' appointment. This visit involves a series of painful injections in both of her lower legs to help her walk. She does not enjoy these visits. Her theory was that the sharks might just scare the doctors enough that they couldn't get close enough to give her the shots. Well, that did not stop the doctors, she got her shots, and we moved on with life.
This morning as I was tying her shoes for her, one of the sharks actually bit my finger. I yelled and jumped back, our two Great Danes were startled, the entire living room was in a tizzy for a moment. It was an event.
My daughter found it hilarious. She spent the next five minutes laughing uncontrollably and then apologized profusely for her misbehaving sharks.
I know you guys are just selling socks. I get it. But you also gave my daughter a little bit of hope during a difficult medical procedure and a morning of joy and frivolity.
Thank you for that.
Now, if you’ll just pardon us a moment while we go wipe our eyes…
Chasity’s story has all the sock fairies smiling from ear to ear, and we hope we’ve brightened your day, too! Sometimes socks really are more than just socks!
