Earth Day is almost here, and if you're looking for ways to celebrate this April 22, you’ve come to the right place. Here at The Sock Drawer, the sock fairies are pulling out all the Earth Day-themed socks and offering ideas to help you make this day special. Whether you like hands-on Earth Day activities or prefer broadcasting your sustainable message by the clothes you wear, there are numerous ways to celebrate.
Here are five suggestions on how to celebrate Earth Day this year. Try one or several. Keep them going all year long in any way that feels right to you.
1. spend the day outside
Nature abounds, so set aside your laptop and get outside. Venture into the forest on a hike, wade in the ocean or a stream or enjoy a community or botanical garden. Find whatever natural attraction is unique to your location and learn about ways to help it thrive.
Spending a day outside can also help you identify where to contribute, whether it is planting a tree, riding your bike or walking to the store to help lower fossil fuel emissions. It may even inspire you to join a group or cause, such as a local group championing clean water.
2. dress the part
Besides Earth Day activities, you should also dress the part. One way to do this is by wearing green socks, meaning both the color and eco-friendly material. Bamboo socks are a fun, unique and sustainable way to honor the earth. Other options include artistic designs, such as garden socks and gorgeous floral socks.
Seek out eco-friendly clothing like t-shirts with environmental messages and designs and wear them proudly. Hand out gifts to those gardeners in your life, and find the best gifts for plant lovers to show how much you appreciate them on Earth Day.

3. learn about environmental issues and causes
Earth Day provides a tremendous opportunity to focus on environmental issues and causes and learn more about them. There are several ways to join others in doing so, including:
- Check out the 3-day livestream Earth Day Live, including musical performances intertwined with teach-ins and panels. Topics covered during the three days include divestment from fossil fuels and frontline communities.
- Find an environmental activist organization for a cause you care about and join.
- Look for activities or festivals in your city or neighborhood and volunteer to help out or plan to attend and participate in supporting their efforts.
4. select reusable items
Plastic is one of the most detrimental things to the planet; from grocery store bags to disposable water bottles, landfills are on plastic overload. Earth Day is a great time to commit to purchasing reusable items, including mesh grocery bags and refillable water bottles. Discover what else you can replace with reusable items and share your discoveries with others.
Also, look for businesses that promote sustainability and choose to buy from them to support their efforts. Here at The Sock Drawer, our efforts toward sustainability are an essential part of who we are.

5. plant something
Trees and plants clean and filter the air naturally and provide food and shelter for various animals. So, why not plant something this Earth Day? Here are a few suggestions:
plant a tree
Learn about which trees contribute most to cleaning the air, releasing higher oxygen levels, and find a location to plant one. Make this an all-day affair, including heading out to a nursery, selecting your tree and coming back and planting it. And you can take pictures each year on Earth Day to show its progress.
plant a garden
While it may not be realistic for you to plant a garden due to space or time restrictions, you can make a small effort by planting in a container or bench planter. If you love salads, create a salad container garden complete with different types of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber. You can keep this on a patio, in a window box or on the rooftop of your building.
Take the time to find out how much fuel it takes to transport produce and other foods to your local grocery store. This way, every time you work in your garden or eat the foods it produces, you’ll know you’re caring for the earth in your own way.
