There are a handful of fashion faux pas that everyone knows. Match your belt to your shoes. No white after Labor Day. And, the one that seems to follow us sock fairies wherever we go, no socks with sandals. Well, sock fans ... where do you stand?
We have found in our many years of sock-based research that people who like crazy, colorful novelty socks tend to not care all that much about bending or even breaking fashion rules. We’re already an offbeat crowd — in the best way, of course! And what better way to show off our wild socks than by wearing sandals?
We believe rocking this combo with pride can be fun and also JUST SO COMFORTABLE. We recently turned to our Facebook and Instagram followers to see what they thought, too.
- In a Facebook poll, 45% of people said they liked socks with sandals, while 55% were against the combo.
- In an Instagram poll, 71% of people said they liked it, while just 29% said no way!
What’s up with the discrepancy between the two polls? We’re not sure, but we have a hunch that we have more younger followers on Instagram than Facebook, and wearing socks with sandals seems to be trendy with a younger crowd these days.
In particular, lots of kids, teens and adults seem to be into wearing socks with slide sandals, such as popular sports sandals from Adidas and the like. Part of the athleisure trend of recent years, this fashion choice really is the height of casual comfort.
We love how sporty and fun that looks, but we also think there’s a lot to be said for wearing socks with heeled sandals for a statement look that’s a little less casual.
How cute are those burger socks with the red sandals for a cookout? And Starry Night socks with a sundress would steal the show on a warm weekend out with friends.
